What Art To Sell ! |

The next thing you need to do is to decide what to sell. By now you have seen all those low priced framed prints in stores and on the internet. These are usually framed with plastic glazing so they don't get broke in shipping. Many are framed with metal frames or a very low quality wood moulding. Many are framed using poster prints. The trouble with all the above is this. Plastic glazing will scratch easily. It seems to do this while it is hanging on you wall without anyone touching it. These pictures always seem to come up with scratches on them right while a customer is looking at it. Plastic also draws dust out of the air like a magnet. It does a better job than a humidifier! Metal frames come apart at the corners over time. They also rust, especially when dust begins to collect on them. You take one down six months later to show the picture to a customer, wipe the dust off and the whole top of the frame has lost its finish. For some reason the customer has lost interest in it! Metal frames also have the privilege of being know as the "cheap way to frame". Many pictures are framed using poster prints instead of quality lithographs. Poster prints are made on a very low quality paper and use even lower quality inks. The paper will end up buckling after a few months unless it has been dry mounted. The inks fade out even quicker until you are left with a faded print of no value. Most of this type of art work has been framed using regular mat boards instead of archival rag mats. People buying this type artwork need to study our learning center. You have seen these prints hanging in many stores and restaurants. They are hanging but not selling. The reason they don't sell is because in many cases people who buy art, know more about art than the people selling it! You have to ask yourself, are you going to put art in your store or gallery that everyone else is trying to sell? Why? Do you think you can complete with the print shops in the mall? Department stores? Never happen! |
